Wedding Diaries: Planning Puppy Pictures

It’s been a month now since Chris popped the big question and I can’t believe it went by so fast. There is a lot of wedding planning we need to get done this summer and booking the photographer is on that list. It is important for us that Ares and Chaos are in some of the wedding photos wearing something snazzy in the wedding colors. As I was imagining them doing all kinds of adorable poses, I also started thinking about the logistics of having them around for pictures.

The more my mind churned, the more I started to realize that involving the dogs in the pictures was going to require some strategic planning. Chris and I do not plan to see each other on the day of the wedding until all the pictures are taken except the ones we will take together. We also want to go to a nice outdoor location for pictures, so that means the dogs have to go too.

Ares and Chaos love riding in the car and getting to go places, but this won’t be just another trip to the park or to visit friends. The wedding party will be taken to the photo site via bus or limo, so the dogs will need someone to act as chauffer for them. Once we arrive on location, the chauffer will become the DD: designated dog-sitter. This person would need to be someone they know and someone who would be happy to keep them occupied and entertained while the rest of the picture taking is going on. The DD can’t be afraid to remind the boys of their manners and to be on their best behavior, and also not afraid to pick up poop. There is no way you will catch me doing that job in a wedding dress. I’d like to keep my something blue a little classier than a poop bag on my hand.

As you readers have noticed by now, Ares and Chaos are quite used to having their picture taken and even pose for the camera. Okay, mostly Ares poses and Chaos just appeases his mama. But taking pictures for the wedding will be a little different than me holding up an  iPhone and saying “treat”. There will be people they’ve never met with big black boxes pointed at them, lots of people they know around and would love to play with, and all kinds of sights and sounds to distract them. Even though they are very friendly and have been taught to behave, it will be difficult for them in that busy setting with all the commotion. The DD will have to be there ready to give them a break or stand behind the camera and make a fool of himself/herself to get the boys to pose.

Even after we get all the perfect shots, the DD’s job will not be over. He or she will then need to chauffer the boys back home and feed them and get them settled for their night in. I will bet they will be exhausted and ready for a long nap after an exciting morning, but the DD has to make sure they are all taken care of. They are our precious furbabies after all.

This may seem like a pretty flawless plan if you ask me, but then there’s the one factor that  is always completely unpredictable: Mother Nature. Should it decide to rain or be too windy that day, or both (yikes!), we need a plan B. Finding a nice indoor location in case of inclement weather wouldn’t be a problem if we were just thinking about the humans. But we would have to accommodate dogs, and that could be a challenge. Hotel lobbies and bars/restaurants are not usually dog friendly in the area and add in the fact that Chaos is a ferocious Pit Bull, and it could make our quest even harder. We are hoping that the photographer we choose will be experienced with this kind of dilemma and be able to give some suggestions. But I am confident that we will have a solid plan and back-up plan that will guarantee our little boys can be captured sharing a part of our big day with us.
