Frist Trimester Favorites

Happy 2016!

I am officially leaving the first trimester behind for the new year so I thought I’d share some of my favorite pregnancy stuff so far. Honestly, the first trimester wasn’t so bad. I know, I know, most of you probably want to kick me for saying that, but it’s true.  My biggest complaint has been heartburn followed by stuffiness. Although I’ve suffered some morning sickness and afternoon nausea, I’ve never spent any amount of time with my head in the toilet. I feel for all of you who have. I honestly think you all should get a free pass next pregnancy. Or least be spared of any type of sickness for a year. But I digress. There is so much to learn when you get pregnant the first time it’s pretty overwhelming. I hope that sharing some of these items I’ve found to really work will help a new mama to be feel less omg there is SO MUCH pregnancy stuff, what do I choose? and more like yes, someone else already did the work for me! So here are my first trimester favorites ripe for the clicking.

Bump Nest Pregnancy Pillow
I heard about pregnancy pillows from a few gals I know who were pregnant this year. In my research I came upon the Bump Nest pillow (reads: the mother of all pregnancy pillows).  Now, it’s a bit expensive for a pillow. BUT I assure you it’s worth it. Trust me, it’s worth it. And my very own husband can attest to the fact that you do not have to be pregnant to enjoy it. So just remember this sucker will more than pay for itself whether this is your first or your last pregnancy because you can use it forever.  I discovered this pillow just about a month away from Christmas and hadn’t yet started sprouting a belly, so I just put it on my wish list. Santa was good to me and I was pretty shocked when I opened a big box to find it still folded up inside its original bag. Yup, this thing is HUGE. When you unfold it you see that it’s a candy cane shape with a hook at the top. I thought maybe there would not be any room for Chris in our bed anymore until I realized it really doesn’t take up that much space. You’re lying mostly on it and not next to it. I mentioned that something had been helping me to sleep through the night without waking up to heartburn and this is it. Clearly the position you sleep in really does matter when it comes to turning into a fire breathing dragon at 2 AM or sleeping peacefully until the alarm goes off. I love mine so much I even named it. Seriously, you will quickly become very fond of yours and your husband will probably try to steal it.

 Crane Humidifier

Tis the season for colds, sinus infections and generally feeling like your head weighs 800 pounds. Typically pregnant women are affected even more so and sleeping with a good humidifier is pretty much a necessity this time of year. We registered for this one before our wedding and were lucky enough to receive it. However it is still sitting at my parent’s house since our move. We have a children’s version for the dogs that I wrote about here and have been using that in our room instead. I highly recommend this brand because it’s super easy to use, clean and works extremely well. Get one for yourself, get one for your kids, hell, get one for your dogs!

 Vitafusion Prenatal Vitamin/Gentle Iron Supplement

If you’re pregnant or you’ve been pregnant you are well aware that you’re supposed to take a daily prenatal vitamin. It’s full of all the nutrients you and your growing baby need in one convenient little pill. It takes all the guesswork out of which foods and how much of them to eat. Some of the vitamins essential for pregnancy are actually pretty damn near impossible to get enough of from food alone. The problem is, sometimes they make you feel icky. Or like there is this horrendous taste in your mouth you can’t get rid of. Enter gummy vitamins. Yes, they make them for adults, including pregnant women. I bought these after the one I had been taking suddenly started to turn my stomach. They taste so good I wish the dosage was more than just 2 a day. Promise. They contain all the good stuff you need with one exception: iron. So in addition to the gummies I found a gentle iron supplement that has yet to cause me any stomach issues whatsoever. Of course talk to your doctor instead of taking my word on this one but hey, at least you can ask about these specifically.

Zoe Organics Belly Butter

One of the peskier things about pregnancy is that it can leave you with some lovely stretch marks. Maybe we should view these as a badge of honor for growing a whole little person but most of us would rather avoid them if possible. Yes, I have heard that stretch marks are mostly inevitable. Some women are predisposed to them while others are not. But I’ve also read that even if you are going to get them anyway, using something as opposed to doing nothing can help lessen the severity and prevent some of the damage. So I purchased Zoe Organics Belly Butter at Target, how convenient, and have been loving it! I slather it on all the parts I fear the dreaded marks after my shower and feel good knowing that nothing in this cream is at all harmful to the munchkin inside me. If you’re not pregnant and don’t plan to be, this is just one product in a whole line of non-pregnancy others. The price point is great and unless you live in a remote village, in which case you probably aren’t even reading this, then I’m sure you will pass by a Target this week.  But if you won’t, you can order online too.

Philosophy Skin Care

Over the years I’ve used many, many, many different facial cleaners and moisturizers. Unlike the skin on the rest of my body, the skin on my face tends to be on the sensitive side. I was very fortunate that I really never went through the teenage acne stage and have had relatively clear skin all of my adult life, save for a breakout here or there. So even though I had to be careful not to use any potent facial washes or creams, switching up products was never a problem. And then I got pregnant. It was like I grew new skin. No kidding, sometimes I would touch my face and feel like it wasn’t even my own. I had not switched cleaners or moisturizers in quite a while so I knew it was just the pregnancy hormones wreaking havoc. I asked for Philosophy skincare products for Christmas as I’ve long heard people sing the praises but just couldn’t bring myself to spend the money. Well, I did receive a set last week and it’s been an instant game changer. The purity made simple face wash is silky smooth going on and leaves my face feeling the same all day. Plus, the price isn’t so bad when you learn that the tiniest bit can cleanse your whole face. I’ve also been using the hope in a jar moisturizer and it’s the lightest cream I’ve ever used. It soaks right in with no residue and I think I can feel my skin drinking it in and going aaahhhh. No more rough, bumpy, who’s skin is this anyway? I’ll use this stuff forever!

 The Pregnant Chicken

Finally, pregnancy can be a lot all at once to deal with, especially for a first-timer like me. There are so many fears to start worrying about, questions to ask, things to learn that your pre-pregnant self never thought of. This website is amazing for giving practical information on all this growing a life inside you stuff while putting a hilarious spin on it all. I mean sometimes you really do just need to laugh about it. Even if you aren’t currently pregnant, if you have been before you can find the humor in it and appreciate many of the articles I’m sure. Plus, if you know anyone expecting it’s also a great resource for scoping out awesome baby gifts. You’re welcome.

I hope you all had a safe and happy NYE 2015! I toasted you with my glass of sparkling water. May your hangovers be cured with sleep and good food to start the new year.
