Little Dogs vs. Big Dogs

Dogs are the only species of animals that come in such a wide variety of shapes and sizes. It’s pretty amazing that they all actually are the same species when you look at the diversity of the different breeds. According to onlydogbreeds.com all dogs fall into 5 different general size categories: Toy, Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large. Here’s the break down.

Toy – up to 12 lbs
Small – 13 lbs to 25 lbs
Medium – 26 lbs to 50 lbs
Large – 51 lbs to 100 lbs
Extra Large – over 100 lbs

Since weight doesn’t always equal size, it’s hard to say what the best way to categorize dogs is. But for the purpose of my comparison I’m dividing the categories down the middle. The little dog group consists of dogs up to 50 lbs and the big dog group includes dogs over 50 lbs. Using these standards, at 25 lbs Ares is considered a little dog. Chaos falls just inside the Big Dog group weighing in at 55 lbs.

I originally was going to do a Pro/Con list for both groups, but then I realized, there aren’t cons to either one, the pros are just different. I asked some of my pet parent friends to add their 2 cents and this is what we came up with.

Little Dogs:

-          Easy to transport since you can pick them up and carry them or put them in
           your bag
-          They eat less
-          Their poop and pee puddles are tiny
-          They physically can’t hog the bed/couch
-          Their stuff takes up less room
-          It’s more acceptable to dress them up
-          They require less exercise
-          They can live in any size home

Big Dogs:

-          You can lay on them
-          They can protect you
-          They can participate in sporting events/competitions
-          It’s funny to dress them up (only if they are okay with it)
-          You don’t have to worry about stepping on them
-          They can hike and go running with you
-          They can carry their own stuff in their own backpack
-          They can be working dogs

Having one of each, I can see why someone would want a dog in either group. Some people may prefer only little dogs or only big dogs but I think most dog people are just that, dog people. So I’ll bet we can all agree that regardless of size, our dogs are awesome just because they are ours. We don’t love them because they are 5 lbs or 200 lbs. We love them just for being them and they love us just for being us right back. There is something to be said about that special bond between a dog and a human. They don’t call them man’s best friend for nothing.

**Special thank you to all our friends representing little and big dogs**

Are you a little dog person or a big dog person? Do you have both like me? Send me your little or big dog pictures:hilarykennedy1824@gmail.com.
