The First Snowfall

The weather around here has just been plain crazy. It was 60 + degrees and rainy for the week of Christmas and then we had more seasonally appropriate temperatures the following week. By the weekend it was 50 + and rainy again but something magical happened overnight on Saturday. The temperature dropped significantly and that dreary rain turned into snow! We woke up Sunday morning to a beautiful winter wonderland and it was so exciting. The first snowfall of the year is always my favorite. The view out our back windows was so peaceful and pretty I almost didn’t want to go out and disrupt the perfect white blanket of snow.

We took the morning slow with some snuggles by the fire and furry pillows and blankets. Chris and I ran some errands in the early afternoon and then we took Ares and Chaos out to play. This is the 3rd winter for both dogs so it definitely wasn’t their first encounter with snow. I will never forget that first big snowfall when they were both still babies and had never experienced it before. We took them to Chris’s parents’ house so they would run free and they were total opposites in their opinions of the cold, white fluff. We bundled them up and Ares just took off like a jack rabbit, bounding around with excitement. He really looked like a bunny hopping around and not a puppy in a coat. Chaos on the other hand, was not a fan. He was very little still, only a couple months old at the time, but he quickly decided the snow was not for him. Our little Pittie was curious enough to stick his paws in and sniff it for a minute but then peed in it and promptly ran back up to the door and waited to be let back inside.

We’ve done our fair share of taking snowy walks since, but being all bundled up in their winter gear, both dogs were cooperative for the fresh air. But this year, Chaos actually played in the snow. When we first went outside Ares immediately started running around and his excitement was apparently contagious. Chaos doesn’t really like to run, let alone run through the snow, so it was really fun to watch him enjoying it. He even jumped for snowballs Chris tossed him and both dogs dug through the snow for their tennis ball we threw. How cute are their sweet little snow dog faces?

It’s very cold today (compared to the weather we’ve been having) so the snow it sticking around. This was the best kind of snow because it was enough to cover everything and give it that fresh fallen glistening snow look but not too much that it impacted the roads from being driven on. We are expected to keep our cold temperatures and maybe even get more snow this week. I know a lot of people around here aren’t fond of winter, but I love having all the seasons and I’m ready for it!
