Meeting Baby Zoey

My dogs love babies. I’m not sure if it’s the energy they give off, the way they smell or the noises they make but when there’s a little one around the tails start wagging immediately. Ares and Chaos have both been around babies, but because we’ve either been out in public with them on leashes or at someone else’s home, it was easier to control their excitement. Although Ares has been known to invite himself right into a car seat to snuggle with baby a time or two. And just last week Chaos had his big head right in the face of a baby in a stroller on our walk (her dad said it was fine but I didn’t know he was going to go for it so fast). But yesterday afternoon Ares and Chaos had the new experience of playing with a baby in their home.

My dear friend Lisa has the cutest 5 month old little girl named Zoey. Zoey has a doggie brother and a kitty sister so she is used to having furry friends around. Ares and Chaos aren’t used to a baby arriving right through the back door in a stroller so they got a little crazy at first. In an effort to make the first meeting positive for both dogs and baby, we made the boys stay on their bed until they brought the excitement factor down a few notches. They complained here and there for a little bit but stayed put for the most part. I say for the most part because they each did make a couple attempts to meet the baby before we said it was okay, but nothing a little correction couldn’t stop.

When it was finally time for the first up close encounter, Zoey was all smiles and already reaching for the dogs. We confined everybody to a corner of the room and kept things controlled by only letting one dog at a time play with Zoey. She got to sit on Chaos’s back and tons and tons of wet sloppy kisses, which she loved and thanked him by petting his head. Ares rolled on his back and was wiggling around as she so sweetly shared her toy with him. And then she returned his kisses, open mouthed. The whole thing was incredibly cute and I’m glad we caught some adorable moments on camera to share.

We’ve determined Zoey is a total animal lover and will reach for any of them close enough to her. She even stuck her little fingers in O’s face as he was lounging on the table. He didn’t seem to mind but Piper was nowhere to be found. She knows Lisa well so I think it’s safe to say she’s not the biggest baby fan. She came out as soon as they left. We already knew how much Ares and Chaos are baby lovers but it was so fun to see them interact with our friend’s baby. Hopefully the experience also taught them a little self-control with little ones and gave Zoey a positive association with them. Can’t wait until next play date!
